The author of the essay "The Horse Racing Industry Issues and Reforms", Christa Kurman, argued about a controversial issue -- horse racing which related to animal rights. She used plenty sources in her paper.
One of the paraphrases in the paper is "Some track veterinarians find steroids useful for improving a horse's mental state, physical strength, and overall stamina(Zirin)". This paraphrase is quite appropriate, because Christa used it when she was trying to provide background information about using anabolic steroids in racing. The place for adding the paraphrase is in the beginning of a paragraph, and this paragraph is about a piece of new information. I think using paraphrase is the best choice especially when the author wants to use others' idea, but the words are probably not appropriate in some ways. Obviously, this paraphrase that Christa used just showed its function in the paper.
The author, Christa Kurman, also quoted words from many authorities. One of the quotations in her essay is " 'Where humans are concerned, steroids are banned by all major sporting bodies because they alter performance and pose a serious health risk. A human athlete who illegally takes steroids chooses to accept that risk. A racehorse obviously has no say in the matter' (qtd. in Zirin)". The author used this quotation as a reason or explanation for her view. Every word in this quotation was exactly like what the author wanted to say in her essay, so she quoted the whole sentence instead of paraphrasing or just quoted part of the sentence. This quotation works very well in this paper. It's the explanation for one of the author's ideas, and it ended a paragraph smoothly as well.
It's hard to say using paraphrase is better or using quotation is better, because it's depends on the context of one paper. For Christa Kurman's essay, the paraphrases and quotations she used made great contributions to the overall meaning of the essay. They helped the author explained, illustrated and described every supporting idea in this essay.

Blog Assignment # 5
Nowadays, Christopher Columbus's famous "journey" becomes a more controversial and sensitive topic for people to argue with. Some people who worship Columbus believed that he was a hero, but others think that he caused a brutal disaster for American Indians. However, it was an significant event indubitably in the history for human being whether it was ashamed or glorious.
Everything has two sides just like a coin has two sides. Most of the descriptions about Columbus's experience was written or recorded by the winners' side who were white men. If this event was sorted out by the losers' side who were American Indians. The story about Christopher Columbus must be different. For example, Columbus was a brave man who found new continent and proved the world was round. His peers, other white men, was very friendly to native Indians, they shared corn with them from the tribal stores, showed them where and how to catch fish, and got them through the first winter. And, the native men gave white men some seed corn and showed them how to plant and cultivate it when spring came. This was recorded by the winners' side which has been used in textbooks, journals, magazines, etc. So, today, most of people get the idea of the history are based on the recorded. In contrast, if this part of history was recorded by native Indians, Columbus was actually a brutal and greedy swindler and other white men were as inhuman as beast. It because the fact showed that Columbus and his people deceived native Indians to land on. They forced native Indians work and convert religion, scoured native Indians' islands in search of gold and precious stoned, looted and burned villages, killed thousands of native Indian men, women even children, kidnapped hundreds of men, women, and children and shipped them to Europe to be sold as slaves.
Overall, if the losers wrote the history, everything about this part of history will be the opposite with information wrote by the winners. There are different views about the same part of history only because it is so influential and unforgettable for all the people although they have opposite perspectives. It's too far from today so that people have enough time to reconsider and rejudge it.
